Park and Walk Day

On Thursday, many of the Meerkats participated in the Travelwise Park and Walk Day. Many of us met at the park down the road and a few more met at the church, near the BP. We walked in a big group and even though it was raining we had a great walk together. We even got some hot chocolate for all of our work. Have a look at all the Meerkats who participated:

Maori Language Week: Challenge #1

This week is Maori Language Week! Our first challenge was to learn how to say hello. But it's not as easy as you'd think. You have to say different things, depending on how many people you are talking to. We've made three ThingLinks to show you what to say, depending on how many people you are talking to (hint, click on the red bits to see them talk):

If you're talking to 1 Person:

If you're talking to 2 People

If you're talking to 3 or more People:

Learning About Animals

Mrs Lee came to teach us last week and she showed us some cool things we can do with Google Slides and You Tube. First, we had to pick an animal with our group and find a video about it on the You Tube Channel, All Things Animal TV. Mrs Lee showed us how to embed the video into a Google Slide, so that we could have it in our presentation. Then we wrote some facts that we found out about the animals. Have a look at some of the slides we made:

Road Safety Week: Park and Walk Day

This morning Rowandale School participated in Park and Walk Day as part of Road Safety Week. Lots of children met at the park and the church and walked to school. Mr Davidson went to the park and walked with Han, Samuel and Paris. Sunday and Alex both walked as well. We got to walk with Max the Pukeko and we got some hot chocolate as a reward for our effort. When school started we had an assembly about Road Safety Week. Have a look at us and some of the signs we had.

Making Sixteen

We are moving right along with our teen numbers. Today we got up to 16. Have a look at all the different materials we can use to make 16.

Making Fourteen AND Fifteen

This week some of our groups were able to make Pic Collages showing all the ways we can make both 14 and 15! They had to be very clever and work together by taking different jobs. Well done. Have a look at all of our work:

Sustainable Coastlines

Today the whole school went to the hall and we learned what happens when rubbish goes to the sea. A man named Ryley (a different Ryley from the one in our class).

First Ryley showed us pictures of rubbish at the beach. We saw plastic bags, drink bottles, gloves, lolly wrappers and sticks.

Then we saw the pictures of a dead bird and a turtle. The bird had lots of rubbish in his belly and the turtle had small plastic ring around him. His shell was squished in the middle.

Next Ryley told us that we could help thes sea creatures by picking up rubbish. Even the land creatures can eat the rubbish. He told us the rubbish gets to the sea through the drain.

So, when we went back to class, we picked up rubbish. We even looked in the drains.

We thought the rubbish was yucky. Seeing the sea creatures made us feel sad and sick because rubbish isn't food.

We have been learning how to program the Bee Bots this term. We know how to make them go forward, backward and how to turn left and right. We have had lots of challenges to get the Bee Bot from one letter to the next. We have worked with a partner and shared the jobs. Have a look at the HUGE challenge that Mr Davidson gave us. We had to make the Bee Bot go through the whole race course. Have a look at what George did!

Stop Motion Videos

Today, Mr Davidson showed us how to use an app on the iPad to make Stop Motion Videos. It was really easy. You just had to make sure the camera didn't move. You take a toy and press the picture button. Then you move the toy a little bit and take another picture. You keep doing this over and over and then you get a movie. Have a look at some pictures of us doing it and some of our creations today. I can't wait to see what we'll come up with when we keep practicing this.
