Hazelnut and Luna Arrive in New Zealand

The Marvellous Meerkats are taking part in the Travel Buddy Project started by PLC Sydney. A few days ago, they arrived here at Rowandale School. We're posting on their blog HERE (and you can find their blog on the sidebar), but I've copied the posts to our blog as well...

A few days ago, Hazelnut and Luna arrived in New Zealand and decided to visit us here at Rowandale School. They looked exhausted when they came to my door. It must have taken them ages to get all the way from Faraday School in England. They brought a book with them to tell us all about London.

All of the children were very excited to meet our new friends. We made sure that we sat and listened very carefully when they read their story to us.

Later, it was our day to take care of some of the animals that live at our school so we decided to bring the two of them to help us with our work. Our pigs are named Hettie and Percy (but our chickens don't have any names).

We're looking forward to having our two new friends visit us this week. It's Maori Language Week, so hopefully they will go to their next school knowing some new words!

Using Google Slides to Show What We Read

This week, the Chimpanzees were reading the book, Wolves. They did lots of activities about the book. One of the activities was to make a slideshow about wolves. Here is the work that Sunday and J-Lynn did:

Flight in Nature

This week we began learning about Flight. We talked about all the different things in nature that could fly. We came up with lots of different thing using Padlet. Have a look at what we wrote. Have a go and add something that you think we missed (put your name on it though, so we know who it was from). We're going to do some more learning about these things in the next two weeks so come back and check to see what we've learned.

Sustainable Coastlines

Today the whole school went to the hall and we learned what happens when rubbish goes to the sea. A man named Ryley (a different Ryley from the one in our class).

First Ryley showed us pictures of rubbish at the beach. We saw plastic bags, drink bottles, gloves, lolly wrappers and sticks.

Then we saw the pictures of a dead bird and a turtle. The bird had lots of rubbish in his belly and the turtle had small plastic ring around him. His shell was squished in the middle.

Next Ryley told us that we could help thes sea creatures by picking up rubbish. Even the land creatures can eat the rubbish. He told us the rubbish gets to the sea through the drain.

So, when we went back to class, we picked up rubbish. We even looked in the drains.

We thought the rubbish was yucky. Seeing the sea creatures made us feel sad and sick because rubbish isn't food. 

Taking Care of the Pigs and Chickens

On Monday the Marvellous Meerkats went to see the pigs and chickens so that we could feed them and clean the poo.

First we got the shovels and the gloves from the garden shed. The shed smells stinky and disgusting. Mr Davidson said it was just dirt.

Next we went to the chickens and we fed them. We looked for eggs but there were none.

Then we gave the pigs some apples to distract them while we picked up the poo and put it in the compost in the garden.

Finally we locked the gates, put the shovels and gloves away and went back to class.

It was very hot and some of us had to go in the shade. It is important to feed the pigs and chickens so they don't die.
